Arnel Pineda's National Anthem Criticized

The National Historical Institute again made a complain about how the National Anthem of the Philippines had been sung this time by Journey vocalist Arnel Pineda on the recently concluded Manny Pacquiao- Joshua Clottey fight held last March 13 in Dallas Texas.

Rumors are spreading that NHI (National Historical Institute) decided to pursue a case against Arnel Pineda as he alledgedly did not follow the original music arrangement of the Philippine National Anthem "Lupang
Hinirang" by composer Julian Felipe. According to Justice Secretary Alberto Agra, who is also the concurrent Solicitor General of the NHI, that Republic Act 8941 prohibits anyone from singing or playing "Lupang Hinirang" in any way other than the orginal arrangement by the original composer and that anyone who was proven guilty would be charged with imprisonment of not more than one year or a fine between P5,000 and P20,000. There is still confrontations going on as to whether or not Pineda would be charged as he sung the Philippine National Anthem in the US and not here in the Philippines as stated by Law.

For my own point of view, it's useless to file cases against entertainers who've sung the Philippine National Anthem on a different beat or tune. I haven't heard about anyone who was convicted nor penalized because of that. Other Filipino singers who have been chided by the NHI for their allegedly faulty renditions of the National Anthem were Christian Bautista, who forgot several words to the song; hit singer Charice Pempengco for belting out the lyrics; Jennifer Bautista for going off-key on the song's last word and Martin Nievera who speculators said the
performance was in "bad taste. I guess instead of pointing out the flaws on how these celebrities sang the athem, I think it's best to just make some changes on the law itself. Even if you ban these entertainers from singing the anthem in different versions, they would do what they damn well please to entertain the audience. I think that's what really matters especially that people watch boxing fight to be entertained after all.

Hi,
I heard him sing it, and as a former choir member, I did notice that he went off-key there. The NHI has the right to express their sentiments, it is after all our national anthem, but then can we blame the singer? I guess this should be a lesson for all of us, because if you'd study those different videos people singing our national anthem, I think only few have an idea of what its key is really all about...but then, if they want to pursue a case, they might as well do it to Martin Nievera, Lea Salonga and Charice as well, diba? Just to be fair, and let's see how's that going to fare...
